Corrections
Policy.
How we handle errors, corrections and complaints, openly.
Press Council norms · IT Rules, 2021 grievance mechanism
Accuracy is the foundation of trust. When we get something wrong, we correct it openly and promptly. This Corrections Policy explains how we handle errors and complaints, in line with the Norms of Journalistic Conduct of the Press Council of India and the Code of Ethics under the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
01Our commitment
NewsFirst is a human-led newsroom. Every published story carries editorial accountability. We verify before we publish and we correct the record when new facts or errors come to light, without defensiveness and without quietly deleting the past.
02What we correct, and how we label it
- Correction: a factual error (a name, date, figure, quote or attribution) is fixed and a note is appended explaining what changed.
- Clarification: content that was accurate but capable of being misunderstood is made clearer.
- Update: a developing story is revised as facts evolve, with the change noted.
- Retraction: where a report is materially wrong, we withdraw it and say so prominently.
Substantive corrections are transparently flagged on the article; we do not make silent edits to the substance of a published report.
03How to report an error
If you spot an error, please write to [email protected] with the article’s headline and link, the specific point you believe is inaccurate, and any supporting information or sources. The more detail you give, the faster we can verify.
04Our process and timelines
We acknowledge correction requests within 24 hours. Our editors review the claim against the original sourcing, seek verification, and where a correction is warranted we publish it promptly, typically within 72 hours, and sooner for significant errors. Where a claim is not upheld, we explain why.
05Right of reply
Where a person or organisation is the subject of critical reporting, we make reasonable efforts to seek their response before publication and to carry it fairly. A right of reply may be offered after publication where appropriate.
06Requests to unpublish
As a matter of record integrity we do not routinely unpublish accurate journalism. In narrow circumstances, for example, legal requirements, risk to safety, or protection of a vulnerable individual, we may amend or remove content at editorial discretion.
07Grievance redressal mechanism
Consistent with the three-tier structure under the IT Rules, 2021, complaints are handled as follows:
- Level I, Grievance Officer: the first point of contact for any complaint about our content. We acknowledge within 24 hours and dispose of the complaint within 15 days.
- Level II, Self-regulatory body: if you are not satisfied with the Level I decision, the matter may be referred to the self-regulatory body of publishers of which NewsFirst is a member.
- Level III, Oversight Mechanism: the Oversight Mechanism of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India.
